(Gurabo, Puerto Rico – December 15, 2024) - The Purple Flag Project (Proyecto Bandera Violeta), a municipal commitment and collaboration between the organizations Coordinadora Paz para las Mujeres, Red Nacional de Albergues de Violencia de Género and the League of Puerto Rican Cities, along with the support of the Municipality of Gurabo, is pleased to announce the municipalities that were able to demonstrate their commitment to the eradication of gender-based violence (GBV).

Through eight training modules and a technical assistance workshop during the months of August, September, October and November, municipal government personnel had the opportunity to train on topics such as: Violence against women and stalking, Service Program Development, Legal tools to eradicate sexual harassment and domestic violence, among others. The modules and resources used in the process were provided by Coordinadora Paz para las Mujeres.

Twenty-nine municipalities committed to the initiative. Of these, 21 towns met all the requirements and objectives of the project. The municipalities receiving their Violet Flag today are: Fajardo, Maricao, Utuado, Toa Baja, Guánica, Vega Baja, Hormigueros, Cataño, Barceloneta, Naranjito, Guayama, Gurabo, Camuy, Ponce, Ceiba, Guánica, Las Piedras, Quebradillas, San Germán, Trujillo Alto and Vega Alta.

The municipalities were evaluated by nine people representing the academic sector, the philanthropic sector, members of the legislature and the three organizations collaborating in this project. The evaluation criteria included the development or adoption of GBV intervention protocols during emergencies or extreme weather events, active participation during the workshops, demonstrating the municipality's commitment to develop and maintain the initiatives in the long term, the development or adoption of internal intervention protocols during GBV emergencies involving municipal personnel, among others.

This initiative promotes the creation of communication networks, services and support between municipalities, while raising the discussion on the development of prevention projects to provide survivors with the alternative of feeling safe by seeking services in their municipality.
